Portal Alive Kicking Alive Kicking secrets and easter eggs

Rat Man dens, hidden messages, and the lore that survived the remake.

Secrets & Easter Eggs

Portal has always been wider than its test chambers. Doug Rattman — the Rat Man — left evidence of his presence across Aperture before Chell arrived. Hidden rooms, scrawled messages, and a radio with a red LED are the texture that turns a puzzle box into a place. This page documents what the original game hid and what Alive & Kicking carries forward in its Portal 2 rebuild.

Spoiler territory. Everything here is past Chamber 05.

Rat Man dens

Doug Rattman was a test subject who escaped GLaDOS’s earlier experiments and spent the rest of the game living in the walls of Aperture Science. He left behind dens — hidden rooms with scrawled messages, food wrappers, and evidence of survival. The dens are not required to finish the game, but they are why the Enrichment Center feels lived-in.

Original Portal hid six Rat Man dens. Until the community confirms which ones survive in the 2026 remake, the locations below follow the original layout:

Den 1 — Chamber 03 pit area. Behind the pit, accessible with a precise portal shot. Rattman camped here to watch test subjects fall. Contains a cryptic message about observation.

Den 2 — Chamber 05 fizzler corridor. After the emancipation grill, before the exit. A sleeping bag, food cans, and a note questioning the cake’s purpose.

Den 3 — Chamber 07. Behind the raised platform area. Rattman drew a map of Aperture on the wall. The map is inaccurate by design — he was paranoid and writing fast.

Den 4 — Chamber 08. Above the pit chamber, accessible from the pit floor with a well-placed portal. A radio with a red LED, food wrappers, and the message: She is going to kill me.

Den 5 — Chamber 09. Behind the moving platform track. Rattman left a photograph of a dog. The caption reads: Dogs are good.

Den 6 — Chamber 17. Behind the pellet catcher area. The densest den: multiple notes, a survival setup, and a final message about waiting for the rocket to fire.

The walkthrough does not route through these. They require curiosity and a willingness to look at walls instead of buttons.

Hidden messages

Scrawled text appears on walls throughout Aperture. Rattman was not the only voice — previous test subjects left notes too. Common hidden messages:

  • The cake is a lie. Found in Chamber 03 and again near the escape. GLaDOS promised cake; test subjects learned not to expect it.
  • You are being watched. Chamber 05 and Chamber 09 corridors. Rattman’s paranoia in print.
  • There is no bottom. Chamber 08 pit area. Either a warning or a taunt, depending on your relationship with the fizzler.
  • Don’t listen to her. Chamber 12 area. A previous test subject’s note to the next one.

Alive & Kicking uses Portal 2’s panel and wall language. The messages appear where the original put them; the surfaces look different, the ink is harder to miss.

The radio in Chamber 08

The most famous secret in the original Portal: a working radio in the Rat Man den above Chamber 08, tuned to an 8-hour loop. The loop has ended by the time most players find it. Alive & Kicking’s Chamber 08 in the remake is the same sightline room it always was; the den above it is the same hidden space.

If the remake’s Portal 2 engine allows the radio to play a longer or different loop, the community has not published a confirmed answer. Check community posts after a first clear.

What the remake adds

The store page for Alive & Kicking mentioned retcons and extra details the original could not carry. Portal 2’s engine allows:

  • More detailed Rat Man den environments. The sleeping bag, food cans, and messages are in the same locations but with better asset fidelity.
  • A reactive score that changes the mood of hidden spaces. A den that felt claustrophobic in 2007 sounds different when the score is live.
  • The escape halls are rebuilt. The space behind the observation room may contain new texture detail that was not possible in the original Source branch.

The developers have not published a list of what exactly was added versus preserved. Until the community datamines the 2026 build, treat every den as potentially deeper than before.

Finding secrets without a guide

The chambers that hide the most:

  • Chamber 03 pit. Look up before you leave.
  • Chamber 08 pit floor. Look up before you solve the room.
  • Chamber 09 platform track. Look behind moving infrastructure.
  • Chamber 17 pellet catcher. Look past the catcher.

A portal gun makes reaching hidden walls easier than the original allowed. Blue on the pit floor, orange on the den wall above — that is the basic geometry for three of the six dens.

Secrets and achievements

Original Portal hid radios that fed into the Transmission Received achievement. Alive & Kicking lists nine Steam achievements, not the original’s fifteen. If a secret in this remake is achievement-gated, the community has not confirmed it yet. Use the achievements page to track what the overlay shows, and check community posts if a grey box stays grey after a legal clear.

The differences from Portal page covers what the remake keeps and what it changes. This page covers what survived in the walls.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for testers stuck in Aperture.

How many Rat Man dens are in the game?

Original Portal had six. Until the community confirms the 2026 count, those six are the reference.

Is the radio still in Chamber 08?

The hidden space above Chamber 08 still exists in the remake. Whether the radio plays a different loop in the Portal 2 engine is community-confirmed territory.

Can I get all achievements without finding secrets?

Probably. Most story achievements fire from main-chamber progression. If a secret is achievement-gated, the community has not confirmed it yet.

Does the remake add new secrets?

The store page mentioned retcons and extra detail. The escape halls are rebuilt. Until the community datamines the build, treat every den as potentially deeper.

Where is the first secret most players miss?

Chamber 03 pit. Most players walk out without looking up. The first den is right there.
