Portal: Alive & Kicking ships a new reactive soundtrack, not a rerelease of Kelly Bailey and Mike Morasky’s 2007 stems. Composer credit on the Steam soundtrack app is Dot Operator, with artwork by Clover Field, published under Rhubarb & Rhubarb. The store copy says the score mixes Portal’s forlorn drones with Portal 2’s reactive stingers. You hear it by playing the campaign. The trailer on this page is the shortest legal sample.

A separate Steam item, Portal: Alive & Kicking Soundtrack (app 1233970), lists more than half an hour of music and fourteen-plus named tracks. At the 28 August 2026 game launch that DLC was still an unreleased extra — wishlist it, do not expect a Buy button until release notes say it shipped. The in-game mix is already in 1.0. The DLC is the album you can keep after the test.

Dot Operator told the Steam board the music is original and not under the same legal freeze as Valve Source code. That is why a downloadable album can exist as its own SKU while the maps cannot live on ModDB.

“Layman’s Terms” is the joke from GLaDOS’s momentum lecture. “Fling Into Space” is the eight-minute piece you will remember from long pits — practice those pits with how to play. “First Sign of Defiance” sits where the campaign stops being polite, which is also where how to beat GLaDOS starts being the right tab. “Rhubarb, on Fire” is six minutes of the studio’s own name on fire; treat it as the escape’s oxygen, not as a puzzle hint.

The three-second closer is a sting, not a missing file.

How the score behaves in 1.0

Reactive means chambers add layers as you solve, closer to Portal 2 than to a looping 2007 MP3. If you pause in a pit, the music may thin. If you chain flings, it may swell. That is not a volume bug. Do not “fix” it by stuffing Portal 2’s sound/music folder into the remake — leftover Portal 2 mods already break menus per troubleshooting.

Captions will not print the track title. If you want names, this page is the legend. If you want Still Alive, that is Jonathan Coulton’s 2007 credit song; whether this remake plays a cover is a discovery after the incinerator, not a checkbox here.

What is not this soundtrack

Valve’s 2011 ARG had a file nicknamed “Alive and Kicking.” That is a different artefact from a different year. Do not download ARG rips and call them Dot Operator. The Orange Box OST and Songs to Test By are still the original games. This remake’s in-world mix is new even when a chamber layout is old.

Community threads about a “wauterboi demo soundtrack” are nostalgia for older A&K builds. 1.0 is the Steam mix.

When the DLC goes live

The launch post bundled “a downloadable Soundtrack” with elite maps and bug fixes as things to look forward to. Until the soundtrack app leaves the unreleased extra state:

• Play the campaign. The score is already there.
• Wishlist app 1233970 if you want the album files.
• Do not pay a third-party zip. When Rhubarb & Rhubarb ships it, Steam will own the button.

After it ships, this page will note the date next to release notes. Elite maps still belong on advanced chambers, not in your music folder.

Listen in the chambers. The cubes do not dance, but the flings do.
