Portal Alive Kicking tools
Fix the menu, the language, and the Deck before you blame the cube.
These tools pages exist because Portal: Alive & Kicking is a Portal 2 mod, not a sealed retail box. The puzzles inside Aperture are fair. The folders on your PC might not be. If the game never reaches Test Chamber 00, stay here. If it does, go back to the guides hub.
What to open first
The menu never appears, or Steam looks for startup_loading.vtf. That is the same-drive rule. Read troubleshooting top to bottom. The official launch post named this file. Moving Portal 2 and Alive & Kicking onto one steamapps folder fixes more testers than any graphics slider.
The menu appears, then the process dies when a map starts. Still troubleshooting: -threads 1 and multithreaded rendering off. That pair is the developer workaround for a crash they could not always reproduce.
You can play, but the voice or subtitles are in the wrong language. Steam’s store table listed English for interface, audio, and subtitles. Players still asked how to change them. Language settings explains what you can inherit from Portal 2 and what you cannot.
You are on a Steam Deck or Linux. Compatibility was Unknown at launch. Testers reported boot crashes. The Steam Deck guide is the honest page: Proton experiments, what not to expect, and when to sit down at a Windows box instead.
How these tools relate to the campaign
None of these pages solve Chamber 18. They keep the campaign reachable. After a fix, return to getting started if you have not fired a portal yet, or to the walkthrough if you were mid-chamber when the save ate itself.
Saves deserve a special mention. Launch-day threads said saving felt finicky. Treat F6 as religion. If a reload puts you in a broken Chamber 17 catcher state, that is documented on known issues, not as a personal failure.
Do not open achieve.bsp. It is listed here because people will look for achievement tools. It is not a tool. It is a map testers said to avoid.
Launch options cheat sheet
Put these in Steam → Portal: Alive & Kicking → Properties → Launch Options, not in Portal 2’s properties:
-threads 1— map-start crash workaround from the developers.-novid— skip Valve intros if they hang (community habit from Source; try only if videos freeze).-w 1920 -h 1080— force resolution if the menu is off-screen.
Do not paste a grab-bag of Portal 2 graphics mods into the base Portal 2 directory. The launch post said those leftovers can break Alive & Kicking. If you use a cinematic pack, keep it for Portal 2 and play this remake vanilla until you have a stable menu.
What this hub will not do
We will not host trainers, noclip packs, or story skippers. Sequence breaks belong in community videos after the first weekend, not in a tool that ruins someone’s first GLaDOS. We also will not pretend this is a live-service codes page. There are no redeemable codes. There is a free mod that requires Portal 2.
If a future patch adds a repair tool or an official language pack, it will show up in release notes first, then here. Until then, the three child pages are the whole toolkit: crash and install, language, Deck.
Suggested order when nothing works
- Verify Portal 2 files on Steam.
- Verify Alive & Kicking files.
- Confirm both live on the same drive.
- Remove extra mods from the Portal 2 folder.
- Add
-threads 1and disable multithreaded rendering. - Only then try the Steam Deck notes if you are on Linux.
- If the game runs, leave this hub. Go play. The how to play page is more useful than a fourth launch option.
Alive & Kicking is single-player. No amount of launch options will add a second gun. They will only get the first one into Chamber 00.
