Portal Alive Kicking How Alive Kicking differs from Portal
Same test course. Portal 2 paint. New escape. No gels.
Portal: Alive & Kicking is not a sequel and it is not a graphics filter you drop on portal.exe. It is a rebuild of the 2007 campaign inside the Portal 2 engine, shipped on 28 August 2026 by Rhubarb & Rhubarb. If you already know original Portal, this page is the difference list so you stop hunting conversion gel. If you only know Portal 2, it is the subtraction list so you stop waiting for Wheatley. The 2012 demo video on this page is old lighting; the 2026 build is sharper, but the grammar in the footage is still the remake’s grammar.
What stays from 2007
- Chell, GLaDOS, the Enrichment Center, Test Chambers 00–19, Advanced remixes of the late course.
- Cubes, super buttons, emancipation grills, high-energy pellets, sentry turrets, moving platforms, flings. Momentum is still conserved. Speedy thing still comes out.
- Single-player only. No second gun, no calibration course, no hugging your friends list.
- The jokes. GLaDOS still lies. The cake still has a job.
If you can clear original Portal Chamber 18, you can clear this Chamber 18 as a puzzle. The walkthrough exists because launch-week geometry (catchers, softlocks) is not identical even when the trick is.
What Portal 2 donates
- Panels, lighting, shaders, and the white-and-black chamber language of the sequel. Jeep Barnett’s store quote is about tiles revisited, not about new toys.
- Clearer puzzle cues: pulsing portalable surfaces, stronger read on pits, a score that telegraphs flings. The store promised this; testers noticed it in Chamber 08 and 16 screenshots.
- Controller support and captions as Steam features. See controls and language settings.
- The install tax: you must own Portal 2 in the same steamapps folder, same drive. Original Portal never asked for that. Fail it and you get
startup_loading.vtfon troubleshooting.
What Portal 2 does not donate
No repulsion gel, propulsion gel, conversion gel, aerial faith plates, thermal discouragement beams, excursion funnels, hard-light bridges, or a personality sphere sidekick. How to play is the physics class without those toys. If a YouTube thumbnail shows orange gel, it is the wrong game.
No two-player campaign. Portal 2’s cooperative courses are still in Portal 2.
What is new in this remake
- Escape sequence. Steam testers on launch day called the behind-the-scenes path new. Rocket-and-core grammar remains; the halls do not. Use how to beat GLaDOS, not a 2007 elevator clip.
- Soundtrack. Dot Operator wrote a reactive score that mixes 2007 drones with Portal 2’s stingers. Fourteen-plus tracks are listed on a separate Steam soundtrack app that was still an unreleased extra at launch. Full list on the soundtrack page.
- Achievement count. Steam lists nine unlocks, not original Portal’s fifteen. Details on achievements.
- English voice row. The store matrix ticked English for interface, audio, and subtitles. Original Portal shipped a pile of languages. Captions still exist.
- Future Elite maps. Not in 1.0. Promised as free follow-up next to bug fixes. Advanced chambers is the current encore.
What will surprise original players
Lighting that makes Chamber 16’s turret lanes look meaner. A Chamber 17 catcher that launch testers said could softlock. Chamber 18 that still sits in S on the tier list because a cube can vanish behind a door. Saves described as finicky — original Portal’s autosave was not famous either, but this 1.0 wants two rotating manuals.
The demo video is useful as a mood board, not as a routing bible. Bolloxed’s later demo walkthrough lives on getting started for Chambers 00–03. Neither video is the 2026 escape.
What will surprise Portal 2-only players
You will miss the dual portal gun for several chambers. You will not paint walls white. You will not bounce on blue gel. You will fling with gravity and a floor portal, the 2007 way. The companion cube still has a chapter. GLaDOS is the whole voice cast that matters.
You also cannot launch this remake without Portal 2 installed beside it. That is the opposite of a standalone sequel. The install guide is not optional flavour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for testers stuck in Aperture.
Is this just Portal 1 with Portal 2 textures?
Mostly the 2007 course in Portal 2 materials, plus clearer cues, a new score, and a rebuilt escape. Not a texture pack you drop on the original.
Will I see gels or faith plates?
No. Those are Portal 2 toys. This remake keeps 2007 mechanics. See how to play.
Can I skip Portal 2 if I own original Portal?
No. The remake reads Portal 2 assets from the same steamapps folder. Original Portal on another drive does not count.
Is the ending the same?
The rocket-and-core fight remains. Launch posts said the escape halls are new. Use how to beat GLaDOS.
