Portal Alive Kicking updates
What shipped, what is broken, and what the developers still owe the lab.
Portal: Alive & Kicking left a fourteen-year demo cycle and landed on Steam on Friday 28 August 2026 at noon Eastern. This hub is the patch board: the launch notes, the list of things testers already broke, and the future content the store page still advertises. Gameplay pages live under guides. Crash pages live under tools. Come here when you want to know whether your pain is a puzzle or a ticket.
Read these two first
- Release notes — what 1.0 contains (original campaign, advanced chambers, nine achievements, captions, controller support), the same-drive requirement, and the promised elite maps plus soundtrack DLC.
- Known issues — missing
startup_loading.vtf, map-start closes, Chamber 17 and 18 softlocks, finicky saves, Steam Deck boot crashes, achieve.bsp, missing download / Add to Library button. - Soundtrack — Dot Operator’s reactive score, the fourteen-track Steam album listing, and why that DLC was still an extra at launch.
If your issue is not on those pages, it might still be an install problem. Walk troubleshooting before you post that Chamber 06 is unsolvable.
How this remake will change
The store copy says Alive & Kicking includes the original campaign and its Advanced chambers, with additional free content later as it is developed. The launch announcement named three follow-ups: elite-difficulty bonus maps, a downloadable soundtrack, and bug fixes. None of those are numbered patches yet. When they ship, this hub gets a dated entry and the advanced chambers page gains a third ladder.
Until then, treat 1.0 as complete for a story weekend. You can finish GLaDOS without elite maps. You cannot finish her without Portal 2 on the same drive.
Version facts that should not drift
- Status: released (28 August 2026).
- Mode: single-player. No second player, no shared screen, no online.
- Platform: Steam Windows, Portal 2 required in the same steamapps folder.
- Developer / publisher: Rhubarb & Rhubarb.
- App ID: 270470.
If a guide on this wiki ever says the game is still unreleased, that guide is wrong. If a guide promises a second player, that guide is wrong. Those two facts are locked in content/facts.json for a reason.
Community noise versus patches
The Steam board filled up in hours: ARG rumours, language questions, third-floor jokes, Chamber 18 screams. An ARG is not a patch. A language pack is not a patch until it is a Steam language tick. This hub will not document puzzle ARG steps until they are confirmed as shipped content. Play the campaign first; the walkthrough is enough fiction for one weekend.
Jeep Barnett’s quote on the store page is flavour, not a patch note. Dot Operator’s soundtrack comments (new reactive score, not under the same legal freeze as the Source code) explain why music might DLC separately.
What to do after you read a patch
- If the patch mentions drives, threads, or rendering, update your troubleshooting habits.
- If it mentions Chamber 17 or 18, re-check the walkthrough and the tier list.
- If it mentions Linux or Deck, update expectations on the Steam Deck page — we will too.
- If it mentions elite maps, go to advanced chambers, not to a console command you found in 2014.
Alive & Kicking is a finished campaign with a living installer. The cubes are done. The folders might get another hotfix. That is the only reason this hub exists next to the story guides.
When you are done reading dates, go play. The getting started checklist is shorter than a patch manifesto and more useful if you have not opened the vault yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for testers stuck in Aperture.
When did Alive & Kicking release?
28 August 2026 on Steam. It is out. You still need Portal 2 installed beside it.
Is there a patch list yet?
1.0 launched with known workarounds rather than a numbered hotfix. Track changes on release notes and known issues.
Will elite maps be paid?
The developers described additional content as free as it is developed. Elite maps were listed next to bug fixes in the launch post.
Does a patch add a second player?
No announcement says that. The game is single-player.
